How are patients affected by symptoms and side-effects?
Side-effects occur most often when one, as a patient, feel that the initial symptoms of one’s illness or condition start to return. It varies greatly how and when such a crisis shows its face over the course of a "normal" harmless medical treatment. Although the medication is taken as directed, and although family, friends and colleagues are often involved in the course of treatment, unbelievably many of us realize that the planned treatment does not really work as planned. For many of us, medicine has not helped to ensure a better life - on the contrary, it has given us more to battle with during and after our treatments.
It is indescribably difficult to live with both symptoms and medical side effects; they cause one to keep taking medicine in order not to break down. If one stops taking medicine cold turkey, it translates to months, sometimes even years, of experiences with medical side-effects. Side-effects can be made up of many different things, but common for them all is that they make it almost impossible to distinguish between whether the symptoms of one's illness have returned and worsened, or if one is actually “just” experience medical side-effects. Compared to the point where one was still consuming medicine, it becomes even harder to detect the state of one’s health.
